The Jack Wharff Band \u2013 the fast-rising Virginia-bred four-piece outfit putting a distinct stamp on country and Americana music with their self-described \u201cthrashgrass\u201d spin \u2013 turns a rough-around-the-edges reputation into a love story with their new song \u201c Lowlife,\u201d out today (6.19) via Big Machine Records. Driven by the band\u2019s \u201crustic, earthy\u201d ( Billboard) vocals, Appalachian-fused acoustic sonics and rootsy fiddle, the song finds a roughneck outcast with someone who sees past the flaws. With a girl who loves him through the mess, even a county-line lowlife feels like he’s got the world figured out.
“The song is about a nobody, lowlife kid riding around with a run-down car, wearing zebra Crocs who doesn\u2019t know how he ended up as lucky as he is,\u201d says Jack Wharff. \u201cIt is a simple song about feeling so lucky to be as blessed as we are today. I can\u2019t wait for this track to be yours. We worked so hard on it, and it\u2019s something I\u2019m so proud of.\u201d
Written by Wharff, Evan Novoa, Joe Clemmons and Neil Medley, \u201cLowlife\u201d feels like a laid back, unpolished and jangly Appalachian front porch jam as the song\u2019s protagonist sings of a love that makes him feel rich despite his circumstances:
I\u2019m barely getting by and that\u2019s ok
She makes up for whatever I ain\u2019t
I\u2019m just a county line lowlife
She knows I\u2019m a wreck, but she don\u2019t mind
We got the whole town staring at us when we drive by
