Three-time Golden Guitar winner Andrew Swift continues his bluegrass journey with ‘Lonely Dust’ (out today) – a fast-paced yet deeply poignant new single that finds the acclaimed singer-songwriter exploring the lingering weight of loss.
Driven by rolling banjo, soaring fiddle and rich vocal harmonies, the track pairs the infectious energy of traditional bluegrass with some of Swift’s most vulnerable storytelling to date. Written alongside Jason McCoy and Clayton Bellamy of Canadian country outfit The Road Hammers, ‘Lonely Dust’ paints a vivid picture of a life interrupted.
“Writing this one with Jason and Clayton from The Road Hammers was an absolute treat. Even though it’s a song about loss, it was such a fun song to write together. Loss is something we’ve all experienced at some point, and we deliberately wanted to write it in a way that leaves it open to interpretation as to what actually happened.”
Produced by Damian Cafarella at Melbourne’s ZiggyTone Recording Studio, ‘Lonely Dust’ brings together an exceptional cast of musicians, including fiddle player Tammy Rogers, bassist Mark Fain, banjo player Rod McCormack and mandolinist Justin Vilchez of the High Street Drifters. Cafarella also contributes guitar and vocals, while Swift’s longtime bandmate Ben Rechter adds backing harmonies.
Rather than recording together in the studio, the musicians contributed their parts remotely, allowing the arrangement to take shape one instrument at a time.
“It’s a very different experience hearing the song come together one instrument at a time, but also pretty exciting every time a part comes back for us to add into the mix. The players we’ve enlisted for Lonely Dust are amazing at what they do, and I couldn’t be happier with what they’ve brought to the song.”
The new release follows Swift’s debut bluegrass single ‘Brick by Brick’, which made an impressive impact on Australian country radio, reaching #1 on the Country Songs Top 40 Australia Airplay Chart, Australian Country Radio Chart and TMFM Tamworth’s Australian Country Music Top 20 Chart. The track also topped 3 x AMRAP Community Radio Charts, including the National, Metro and Country/Blues/Roots Charts, while reaching #37 on the CountryTown Hot50 National Airplay Chart, becoming the first bluegrass song to chart in the Top 50 in four years.
The success marks another milestone in a career that has seen Swift collect 3 x Golden Guitar Awards, 12 Golden Guitar nominations and 4 x #1 ARIA Australian Country Albums, alongside more than 9 million global artist streams.
His most recent album, Lucky Stars, debuted at #1 on the ARIA Australian Country Albums Chart and #2 on the ARIA Country Albums Chart in October 2025, further cementing his reputation as one of Australia’s most respected and consistently evolving country artists.
After spending much of 2026 embracing family life and his role as a stay-at-home dad, Swift has also been enjoying a welcome return to the stage, with a handful of performances remaining before a busy start to 2027.
“It’s been great to be back out on the road a bit since Brick by Brick came out at the end of July. I knew I missed touring, I just didn’t realise how much! There’s only a few shows left to round out the year but I’m looking forward to being a part some great shows and events in 2027”
Swift will perform at Ruby Hall in Victoria on November 20 and Bundjil Studio in Healesville on November 21, before heading to the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January for appearances at the Bluegrass Hoedown and The Longyard Hotel. He will also join the Singapore to Sydney Country Music Cruise in March and April.
With ‘Lonely Dust’, Swift continues to prove that his move into bluegrass is far more than a passing experiment. Combining accomplished musicianship, heartfelt storytelling and an unmistakable voice, the new single offers another compelling glimpse into an exciting new chapter for one of Australian country music’s most enduring talents.
